First Holy Communion

“…come to the feast of heaven and earth, come to the table of plenty”*

This past Saturday, May 5th the second grade students received Jesus Christ in the Eucharist for the first time. What great joy for all who attended the Mass. During Msgr. Vincent Bommarito’s homily he pointed out that the First Communicants (2nd grade students) had on “glowing halos.” Not only did the First Communicants’ halos glow but so, too, did their smiles and personalities as they lead their family, friends, and teachers in praising and worshipping Jesus.

Pictured: First Communion Class with Sr. Christine Kiley, a.s.c.j (Principal), Msgr. Vincent Bommarito (Pastor), Mrs. Jennifer Ruggeri (2nd grade teacher), and Sr. Bridget Smith, a.s.c.j. (2nd grade teacher).

May Crowning

“O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today…”*

On Thursday, May 10th, while Bishop Ed Rice, Msgr. Vincent Bomorrito, Fr. Jason Shmur, the First Communicants, and the entire student body flanked the newly dedicated statue of Our Lady of Fatima the May Queen uttered: “We bring you fresh flowers, formed in a ring. In order to crown you and welcome the Spring, We want to be near you, and welcome Spring. We want to be near you, on this special day, Mary, we love you, our Queen of the May” as uttered by the May Queen after she crowned Mary.”

Our heartfelt appreciation to Bishop Rice for celebrating the all school Mass on May 10th, dedicating the recently refurbished Our Lady of Fatima statue, and sharing of his love for the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Congratulations to Austin Danback on completing his Eagle Scout Project, the renovation of the Fatima statue and establishment of the Respect Life Garden which are in front of the Parish Rectory.

* Taken from the hymn “Bring Flowers of the Fairest” (unknown composer) which was sung as Mary was being crowned.

Not Your Ordinary K.I.T.E

By Lynne Lang, Director of School Climate for the Catholic Education Office, Archdiocese of St. Louis

The expression “go fly a kite” has been recognized as a negative comment, referring to one’s annoying presence. … The kite is a symbol of springtime and can have good application for Catholic school climate. There is no better way to teach empathy than in the moment it is needed. So by looking for teachable moments, we find ourselves looking out for others, becoming aware of ways we can be of service. …

Kindness requires us to place the needs of another before our own. When we practice the Virtue of Kindness (a fruit of the Holy Spirit), we are imagining we are walking in the shoes of another. … Kindness in God, practiced as a virtue, is an act deliberately intended to help another get in heaven, … Most of us just think of kindness as being helpful out of human need. If we reach for a deeper meaning in our actions, we are imitating Christ, and choosing to help a brother or sister along the journey to eternal life.

So the next time you let someone with fewer groceries step in front of you in line, that is an expression of empathy, recognizing even such a small burden as this can make a difference. Your extra smile and encouragement may make all the difference in how a person treats the next person that comes along in a parking lot, a schoolyard, or at home.

Note: Lynne Lang will present on “Restorative Discipline” to all parents on Monday, May 14th at 7:00 p.m. and, again, on Tuesday, May 15th at 7:00 a.m.

2nd Graders Preparing for First Holy Communion

It comes as no surprise to the 29 2nd grade students when they hear Msgr. Vincent Bommarito ask them to “Please stay after a school Mass”. The 2nd graders know that they are not in trouble. They know to head up to the sanctuary (area around the altar). The students know this because almost weekly since the beginning of March they have meet with Msgr. Bommarito to study and understand the Eucharistic Prayer which will be used during their First Holy Communion Mass.

This time with Msgr. Bommarito adds to what the students are learning in their classroom under the guidance of Mrs. Jennifer Ruggeri and Sr. Bridget Smith; and, what they are reviewing with their parents through family pages in their “We Believe & Celebrate First Communion” book.

The 2nd grade students will receive Jesus in The Eucharist for the first time during Mass at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5th. Please keep the children in your prayers.

4th Grade Tradition: Field Trip to Jefferson City

In St. Ambrose tradition, 4th Grade took their trip to Jefferson City on Wednesday, April 18th.

The students along with their parent chaperones, Mrs. Jenn Smith (teacher), and Ms. Kathy Mitchell (teacher’s aide) first stopped at the Fireman’s Memorial in Kingdom City. Their second stop was a tour at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion were they were able to see all the lovely paintings of each first lady and some of the pieces of furniture left by past governors. After the Mansion tour, they enjoyed a picnic style lunch on the grounds behind the mansion.

The group’s third stop was the Capital building where they by Representative Michele Kratky (65th District) and got to visit the House of Representatives’ Chambers. The House was on a session break but all got to walk around and even get a picture taken with Rep. Kratky by the Speaker of the House’s chair/podium. One of the 4th graders’ favorite stops in the Capital building was the room that Thomas Hart Benton painted his murals! Each section depicted a pictorial timeline of our state’s history.

After leaving the Capital building the students and adults went to the Missouri Highway Patrol Museum where they viewed displays of information concerning traffic safety, law enforcement, drug abuse and items relating to the history of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The final stop of the day was to the Runge Conservation Center where the students took a class about reptiles and amphibians. The students got to touch some native reptiles and amphibians of Missouri, including a Red Milk Snake and a toad! Of course, the class could not return without a stop to McDonalds in Kingdom City.

It was a wonderful day full of learning and a excitement!

This Saturday, March 10th marks the 151st Anniversary of Mother Clelia Merloni’s birth. Mother Clelia is the foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have served at St. Ambrose School since 1941.

Did you know?

… Mother Clelia is very much a woman of our day and age, though born in 1861. At the death of her dear mother…she became the child of a single parent. She became the child of a broken home when a few years after remarrying, her father…entered into a relationship which broke the heart of his second wife…who left and shortly thereafter died. Each of these experiences prepared Clelia step by step for the vocation to which God was calling her. …

To celebrate the life of any person is to celebrate their achievements. Some might assess founding a religious community Clelia’s greatest achievement, but to count this as such is to focus on the externals of her life. Clelia’s profound trust and tenacious search for God’s will in all the strange twists and turns of her life, whether that be discerning a specific vocation or patiently and lovingly responding when confronted with rejection or betrayal, is her greatest achievement.

In all things she responded with love and loved even when it was difficult or hard. We celebrate the birth of Clelia Merloni, because she is a Witness of Love. Source: www.ascjus.org

Spring Break Adventures with Clelia … Where in the World Is Mother Clelia?

This is a new rendition of “Flat Stanley.” Children may color the picture of Mother Clelia, have someone take a photo of them with their drawing, and send it to Christina Sanders at ctinasanders@yahoo.com. Please include the location where the picture was taken. Pictures will be featured in future newsletters so, that, we may see where Mother Clelia traveled during the spring break of her 151st year of her life!

The picture to color may be found at http://www.ascjus.org/data/files/news/AdventuresofClelia/adventures_of_clelia1.pdf

Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in you.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, we believe in your love for us.

Our Lenten Journey Continues:

Our School Community continues to pray the Stations of the Cross on Thursdays. Come join us as we join Jesus on his road to Calvary. Remaining dates are March 22nd, and 29th from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. in the Church.

Service to others: Each grade and House are serving others during the Lenten Season. During last month’s Enthronement of the Sacred Heart, Sr. Bridget (Coordinator of Catholic Identity) asked the students to serve others as Jesus served; and, the students took her request to heart. This week, the middle school students within the House System are making sandwiches to be distributed to the poor; more information on this project and others to come.

Our Lenten journey

Sssssh!!: Alleluia Farewell: On Tuesday of this week all of the students went forth from church and placed their individual Alleluia banners in a box. Since Alleluia is not said or sung in Church from the Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil, the banners will be kept in the box all through Lent. Our prayers and songs will have a different tone during Lent. Our focus will be on prayer, fasting and giving of ourselves so we can unite ourselves to the sufferings and death of Jesus. Then on Easter, the Church will break into songs and prayers of praise filled with Alleluias to proclaim Christ’s resurrection. When we return to school after Easter, the Alleluias will be removed from the box, a darkened place, to celebrate Jesus’ triumph over sin and death.

The Season of Lent Nears

Next Wednesday, February 22, the universal Catholic Church will enter into the Season of Lent. Our students and faculty will prayerfully begin the Lenten Season by attending a parish-wide Mass at 9:00 a.m.; please join us.

At the Ash Wednesday Mass blessed ashes are spread on our foreheads in the form of a cross—signifying the penitential nature of Lent. Those ashes, which come from the burning of palm branches used on the previous Passion Sunday, are spread by a minister as the somber words of Genesis 3:19 are said, You are dust an shall return to dust, or the clear admonition of Mark 1:15, Turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. +

Dust and ashes are signature symbols of Lent, the 40-day liturgical season of prayer, reflection and discipline intended to open us more fully to God’s redeeming and healing presence. +

Ashes denote traditional Lenten goals that we are encouraged to strive for in our relationship with God and with others—for repentance and sorrow for sin and spiritual sloth; for humility in the face of God’s greatness; for good grief and appropriate mourning for all the inevitable losses in our lives. To show that he was at the end of his rope and could do nothing else but throw himself on the mercy of God, Job sat on the ash heap and spread ashes over his head (Job 42:6; 30:19). The psalmist even declares, I eat ashes like bread…(Psalms 102:10), Jesus cited the need to repent in sackcloth and ashes (Matthew 11:21). +

We may be tempted to shy away from the Lenten symbolism of dust and ashes because it seems too negative. Instead, we would be wise to open our minds and hearts to what the Church offers us each year as a healthy dose of realism about God and God’s mercy, and about ourselves and human life. +
