… Journeying with the Holy Family
Tupa, Tupa! (Knock, Knock!)
Last Sunday, March 18th during the parish wide celebration of the St. Joseph Altar several 7th grade students portrayed the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as well as Masters of the House in a skit titled “Tupa, Tupa!” which means “Knock, Knock!” in Italian. In this skit the Holy Family travels from home to home seeking shelter. At the third home the Master of the House asks the Holy Family, “Who are you and what do you want?” St. Joseph answers, “We are the Holy Family – Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.” Upon hearing this the Master of the House cries out, “Enter, enter.” and he commands his household, “Prepare a grand meal because we have with us the Holy Family.” When did you last welcome the Holy Family to enter your home?
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph I love you.

… Spring Break Adventures with Mother Clelia … Where in the World Is Mother Clelia?
Did you bring “Flat Clelia” on Spring Break with you? Did you take a picture of Flat Clelia on Spring Break? If you answered “yes” to these questions please email your picture to Christina Sanders at ctinasanders@yahoo.com for inclusion in future newsletters. Please include the location where the picture was taken. (Did you know that Mother Clelia celebrated her 151st birthday on March 10th?)
Positive Behavior …
In June of last year all the St. Ambrose School teachers attended a two day professional development workshop that focused on positive behavior. For the remainder of this school year, Tina Murphy, of West County Psychological, will be visiting our school to talk with the 3rd, 6th, and 7th grade students about peer relationships. Ms. Murphy will discuss the following topics: getting along with others; relational aggression, cyber boundaries
Happy Birthday Mother Clelia!

Happy Birthday Mother Clelia!
This Saturday, March 10th marks the 151st Anniversary of Mother Clelia Merloni’s birth. Mother Clelia is the foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have served at St. Ambrose School since 1941.
Did you know?
… Mother Clelia is very much a woman of our day and age, though born in 1861. At the death of her dear mother…she became the child of a single parent. She became the child of a broken home when a few years after remarrying, her father…entered into a relationship which broke the heart of his second wife…who left and shortly thereafter died. Each of these experiences prepared Clelia step by step for the vocation to which God was calling her. …
To celebrate the life of any person is to celebrate their achievements. Some might assess founding a religious community Clelia’s greatest achievement, but to count this as such is to focus on the externals of her life. Clelia’s profound trust and tenacious search for God’s will in all the strange twists and turns of her life, whether that be discerning a specific vocation or patiently and lovingly responding when confronted with rejection or betrayal, is her greatest achievement.
In all things she responded with love and loved even when it was difficult or hard. We celebrate the birth of Clelia Merloni, because she is a Witness of Love. Source: www.ascjus.org
Spring Break Adventures with Clelia … Where in the World Is Mother Clelia?
This is a new rendition of “Flat Stanley.” Children may color the picture of Mother Clelia, have someone take a photo of them with their drawing, and send it to Christina Sanders at ctinasanders@yahoo.com. Please include the location where the picture was taken. Pictures will be featured in future newsletters so, that, we may see where Mother Clelia traveled during the spring break of her 151st year of her life!
The picture to color may be found at http://www.ascjus.org/data/files/news/AdventuresofClelia/adventures_of_clelia1.pdf
Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in you.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, we believe in your love for us.
Mother Clelia, pray for us
Our Lenten Journey Continues:
Our School Community continues to pray the Stations of the Cross on Thursdays. Come join us as we join Jesus on his road to Calvary. Remaining dates are March 22nd, and 29th from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. in the Church.
Service to others: Each grade and House are serving others during the Lenten Season. During last month’s Enthronement of the Sacred Heart, Sr. Bridget (Coordinator of Catholic Identity) asked the students to serve others as Jesus served; and, the students took her request to heart. This week, the middle school students within the House System are making sandwiches to be distributed to the poor; more information on this project and others to come.

Our Lenten journey
Sssssh!!: Alleluia Farewell: On Tuesday of this week all of the students went forth from church and placed their individual Alleluia banners in a box. Since Alleluia is not said or sung in Church from the Ash Wednesday until the Easter Vigil, the banners will be kept in the box all through Lent. Our prayers and songs will have a different tone during Lent. Our focus will be on prayer, fasting and giving of ourselves so we can unite ourselves to the sufferings and death of Jesus. Then on Easter, the Church will break into songs and prayers of praise filled with Alleluias to proclaim Christ’s resurrection. When we return to school after Easter, the Alleluias will be removed from the box, a darkened place, to celebrate Jesus’ triumph over sin and death.
Stations of the Cross: Join the school community parish community as we pray this popular devotion used by Christians to reflect upon the Passion of Jesus.
Join the School Community…Thursdays, March 1. 8, 22, and 29 from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. in the Church.
Join the Parish Community…Every Friday of Lent (February 24; March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; and Good Friday, April 6) at 6:30 p.m. in the Church.
Explore Your Faith:
- Theology 101 ten-week course will be offered at St. Ambrose Parish beginning next Tuesday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m. for approximately 90 minutes. (The first meeting will take place in school cafeteria.) The course is a summary introduction to the discipline of theology and will be taught by Harold Ernst, formally a professor at Notre Dame University. The course is perfect for people who love to explore core faith issues and discuss (sometimes vigorously) their ideas. There are no assignments and it’s OK if you just “listen in” on what’s being talked about. No prior knowledge necessary. No course fee. Please register by contacting Laura Law via FastDirect or 314.771.1228, ext.5.

Teachers as Students: Professional Development
This month, several of our teachers found themselves filling the role of student as they participated in professional development classes.
Mrs. Marie Foster, Kindergarten teacher, attended the “Developing an Outstanding Kindergarten Classroom” workshop given by Andy Baumgartner, an outstanding kindergarten teacher and recipient of the Miliken Foundation Educator Award and National Teacher of the Year. He presented ideas for classroom management, differentiated learning, and developmentally appropriate curriculum.
Mrs. Jennifer O’Toole, 1st grade teacher, and Mrs. Jennifer Smith, 4th grade teacher, attended the “Midwest Education Technology Conference” which offered many exciting opportunities to gain ideas for incorporating technology tools into the curriculum (emphasizing student achievement) and extend learning beyond the classroom.
Mrs. Emily Elmore, 3rd grade teacher, took part in “Keeping Students Actively Engaged in Reading Activities While You Teach Small Groups” workshop geared toward 3rd – 6th grades. The workshop provided a variety of small group and individual activities that students can complete independently while the teacher instructs a small group lesson in Reading.
Mrs. Linda Gambaro and Mrs. Hilma Moses, office staff, as well as Mr. Justin Dibb, Physical Education teacher on March 1st will attend the “Sports Concussion: Facts, Fallacies, and New Frontiers” seminar offered by the Brain Injury Association of Missouri.
Love and Faith, and Hope: Virtue Based Restorative Discipline
“When all of us combine our love and faith, and hope our schools and faculties are hopeful institutions and people. We believe that the God we worship, the God revealed to us in the person and life of Jesus Christ, is more powerful than all the evil in the world. The hopefulness of the Catholic school community is stronger than bullying,” writes Ms. Lynne Lang in a recent article published by the Archdiocesan Catholic Education Office (CEO). Ms. Lang is the Director of School Climate of the CEO.

From Hearts to Ashes

The Season of Lent Nears
Next Wednesday, February 22, the universal Catholic Church will enter into the Season of Lent. Our students and faculty will prayerfully begin the Lenten Season by attending a parish-wide Mass at 9:00 a.m.; please join us.
At the Ash Wednesday Mass blessed ashes are spread on our foreheads in the form of a cross—signifying the penitential nature of Lent. Those ashes, which come from the burning of palm branches used on the previous Passion Sunday, are spread by a minister as the somber words of Genesis 3:19 are said, You are dust an shall return to dust, or the clear admonition of Mark 1:15, Turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. +
Dust and ashes are signature symbols of Lent, the 40-day liturgical season of prayer, reflection and discipline intended to open us more fully to God’s redeeming and healing presence. +
Ashes denote traditional Lenten goals that we are encouraged to strive for in our relationship with God and with others—for repentance and sorrow for sin and spiritual sloth; for humility in the face of God’s greatness; for good grief and appropriate mourning for all the inevitable losses in our lives. To show that he was at the end of his rope and could do nothing else but throw himself on the mercy of God, Job sat on the ash heap and spread ashes over his head (Job 42:6; 30:19). The psalmist even declares, I eat ashes like bread…(Psalms 102:10), Jesus cited the need to repent in sackcloth and ashes (Matthew 11:21). +
We may be tempted to shy away from the Lenten symbolism of dust and ashes because it seems too negative. Instead, we would be wise to open our minds and hearts to what the Church offers us each year as a healthy dose of realism about God and God’s mercy, and about ourselves and human life. +
We are All Heart at St. Ambrose School:
Remain in my Love: During Mass on Tuesday, the 14th all of the students and faculty participated in the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as King of our Hearts. The students received a holy card depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus and were asked to “pass it on” to a person who does not know the prayer on the back of the card. The prayer reads:
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in you. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in your love for me.
Will You Be My Valentine?: Valentine’s Day cards and sweets were in abundance on the 14th:
Sr. Christine treated all the students to heart shaped sugar cookies after they ate their lunch.
STUCO members sold “candy-grams” to the 5th – 8th grade students. The sale of the candy-grams totaled $337 and this amount will be given to St. Ambrose’s “Sick and Elderly Program.”
Jump Rope For Heart
During February, students in their PE classes have done their part to save a heart by participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope For Heart. This program is a great service
learning project that offers students a terrific way to learn about community service, integrate physical activity and critical thinking skills
