This Sunday is Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Week commemorates the Passion of Jesus Christ and the events which immediately led up to the great feast of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday (April 8th).
… 9:00 a.m. Sunday Masses at St. Ambrose Church are family Masses. This Sunday, Palm Sunday, join other St. Ambrose School families at 9:00 a.m. Mass. Then go to the pancake breakfast sponsored by the Cub Scouts, see “News From” on page 2.
… next Thursday, Holy Thursday, during the morning the middle school students will present to the lower grades a tableau of the Stations of the Cross accompanied by narration. Parents are invited.
April 5: Holy Thursday: 8am Morning Prayer. 7:30pm Mass of the Lord’s Supper.… the Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students, before Spring Break, put together a “flip calendar” to be given to Miss Mary Lynne Harris. The calendar pages are filled with notes and fun facts to bring cheer to Miss Harris as she continues to recover from her recent illness.
… Mrs. Emily Elmore’s 3rd grade class donated extra Valentine’s cards and gifts to Children’s Hospital. They will soon be picking up trash at Berra Park.
… Mrs. Jennifer Smith’s 4th grade class collected various arts and crafts items for distribution at Cardinal Glennon Children’s hospital.
… Mrs. Judy King’s 5th grade class will be collecting pajamas and books for needy children.
.… Mrs. Kathy McIver’s 5th grade class wrote letters (in Computer Lab) to “brighten up” a shut–in and others that “need a lift” during their stay in a rehabilitation facility. Included in these letters were prayers and words of encouragement to each recipient.
… the middle school (6th-8th grade) students organized and executed a sandwich-making activity. Members of STUCO and their parents (along with Mrs. Kate Black) took the sandwiches to St. Patrick’s Center to help the Center complete a lunch meal to be given to those the Center serves.
This past Monday, March 26th our teachers participated in a Professional Development (full) Day offered by City Catholic Collaborative. During this day the teachers took part in the following workshops: “Strengthening Instruction for Gifted Students,” “Teaching So Students Remember,” “Homework that Gets Done,” “Writing: Strategies, Literacy skills, and Differentiated Instruction,” “Accelerating Student Learning in Your Science Class,” and “Using Differentiated Teaching Strategies.”
Several of our teachers were heard saying the day was “Excellent.” “Best Professional Day in a long time.” And, “Many good ideas to implement in the classroom.”
Spring Has Sprung!for First Annual Spring Concerts on Wednesday, April 25th
The Kindergarten – 4th grade students will share song and spirit with parents, grandparents, and other relatives. After the concert, an Open House with refreshments will take place, this in an attempt to respond to those who would like grandparents to have an opportunity to visit St. Ambrose School.
The 5th – 8th grade students will share of song and spirit at 7:00 p.m.
In June of last year all of the St. Ambrose School teachers attended a two day professional development workshop that focused on positive behavior. The topics covered at this workshop proved helpful to the teachers and, so, earlier this month the workshop presenter visited the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes and encouraged the students to use positive behavior toward their classmates. For the remainder of this school year, Tina Murphy, of West County Psychological, will be visiting our school to talk with the 3rd, 6th, and 7th grade students about peer relationships. Ms. Murphy will discuss the following topics: getting along with others; relational aggression, cyber boundaries, and bullying issues. All topics will be adapted to the group’s age.
Parents are asked to attend a meeting on “Virtue Based Restorative Discipline” or anti-bullying on Monday, May 14th at 7:00 p.m. A second meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 15th at 7:00 a.m. for those parents who cannot attend the evening meeting on the 14th of May.
… First Annual St. Ambrose School Golf Tournament is June 3rd at Highlands Park Golf Course in Forest Park. $100 per person and includes green fees (9 holes), cart, plenty of food and beverages, prizes and a delicious meal after the game. … Cub Scout Pack 212: Annual Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast is this Sunday, April 1st from 8:00 a.m. to – 11:00 a.m. in the School Cafeteria. Children 10 and younger: $5. Adults: $7.
… Speech Team: Mrs. Judy King (middle school teacher and Bellarmine League Board member) could be heard saying “WOW! Our speech team is awesome!!! I got to hand out 3 Gold Ribbons to St. Ambrose’s students!!” The Gold Ribbon Winners are: Austin Danback in Serious Category, Will Herbig in Humorous Category, and Claire Luna in Humorous Category. Mrs. King said, “I am also very proud of our duets! Both teams got Blue ribbons!” The blue ribbon teams are: Mattie Knight and Lily Kanagawa; and, Katherine and Kristen Ward. Additionally, Mrs. King noted: “We have AMAZING coaches to get these performances out of our students! Coaches are: Miss Kathy Mitchell, Mrs. Joan Dreas, Mrs. Jennifer Ruggeri, Mrs. Judy King, and Signora Annunciata Buzzai. Special thanks to Miss Mitchell for representing our team as a Judge for the meet.”
