Middle School

"Making a Difference in the Middle" is the motto. After studying the various aspects of a good middle school program, the faculty and administration discovered that many of the components were already in place at St. Ambrose. Based on the premise that successful learning takes place when educators make the most of the characteristics and needs of young adolescents, the principal and the teachers designed a program which fosters student initiative and responsibility. Students are encouraged to use their communication skills by actively participating in large and small group discussions. They particularly enjoy putting their ideas and energies together to plan school liturgies and special activities.

The middle school floor is an ideal setting where students can be given space to learn and allowed special privileges.  Flexible scheduling helps the teachers make the best use of time throughout the day. Some classes can be longer on certain days, enabling students to do longer science experiments in the lab, work on projects, or listen to guest speakers.

Planning among the middle school teachers is essential to keep the program going. Teachers meet regularly to evaluate student progress and to plan for future activities. One specific goal this year is to introduce interdisciplinary units for both seventh and eighth grades. Projects centered on particular topics and that can integrate as many subject areas as possible are chosen.

What are the results of the middle school program thus far? The teachers and students enjoy coming to school. Something new is always waiting for them and they are eager to participate in the many activities and events of the day. Students are beginning to take responsibility for their own learning. They realize that the education and religious formation they are receiving at St. Ambrose are unique and valuable. They appreciate the benefits they receive from listening, cooperating, and creating new ways of learning on their own. Students and teachers in the middle school continue to look forward to an exciting year every year.
