Recycle!
Our school recycled 10 tons of paper in the last two months, thanks to
all of you. We are very close to our goal of 35 tons and winning a prize in the
Paper Recycling contest! Please remember to recycle your newspapers, magazines,
catalogs, and school papers everyday. After we win $1,000, we will contribute
our prize to the playground fund. So please recycle and bring the paper to our school
bins on Hereford, across from the Soccer Lot. We need nine tons by March 31. With
everybody’s help we can reach our goal. Thank you.
Safe Environment (Safe Touch) Curriculum
The Archdiocesan Child Safety Committee has developed a school
based-curriculum for grades K-8 that contains practical, helpful information to
help children protect themselves from dangers that exist today. The goal is to
equip our students with the skills necessary for them to participate in their
own personal physical safety. The objective of this curriculum, entitled "Safe Touch," is to teach our
children self-protection skills. Children will learn body safety rules in an
age-appropriate and non-threatening manner. This curriculum will be taught by
Lisa Horner, learning consultant, who is a trained lead teacher. It will consist
of one class period.
The
"Safe Touch" curriculum approaches safety issues in a respectful
manner, connecting our Catholic values with information to keep our
children safe. Please do not hesitate to contact Sr. Carol or Mrs.
Horner if you have any questions or concerns regarding this important
piece of your child's education. Feel free to look over the curriculum
plan presented to your child at any time during the school day. It will
be available in the penthouse, or you can call Mrs. Horner to arrange a
time. If for whatever reason you would prefer your child not to hear
this presentation at school, you have the option of opting him or her
from the program. Simply contact Sr. Carol or Mrs. Horner.
Children's Safety in Using the Internet

These tips were provided by US Attorney, Catharine
Hanaway, at a lecture she gave recently.
- Allow no computers in bedrooms. Keep you
computer in a family room or public area of your house so you can monitor the
sites your child is going to or the pictures they are viewing.
- Take your web
cam off or cover the lens with tape or a sticker. Hackers have figured out how
to turn these on remotely.
- Teach your child not to talk to strangers whether
it be on-line or in person. Most kids understand the dangers of talking to
strangers in person, be sure they also know not to talk to strangers on-line.
- Buy screen shot software at a local office store that will show you page views
updated every 15 seconds. This will allow you to know a predator is not
contacting your child and will help you get their myspace or facebook log on
info.
- Either don't let your child have a presence on myspace or facebook or
require that you be one of their friends so you can view their page's activity.
- Go to the website http://inobtr.org/Intro.aspx to learn more on how to
protect the children you care about.
School Service Projects
We
continue to support St. Patrick's Center through the Key Player
Initiative, collecting over $1,000 and making sandwiches for this
effort. Additionally, students have made holiday cards for nursing home
residents and cards as random acts of kindness for our neighbors,
collected over 33 boxes of product for our miliotary in Iraq, prayed
for our families, and are reading to raise money through the Heifer
Program to purchase animals for poor villages in Africa. Most of our
students have also worked at parish, school, and community functions.
Registration for 2008-2009 School Year
Registration
of new students is currently under way. Please help to promote St.
Ambrose School among relatives, friends, and neighbors. The focus in
the month of March is on Kindergarten registration, with readiness
screening on Wednesday, March 12.
Archdiocesan Tuition Grant Applications for 2008 - 2009 are available at the rectory OR go online at www.factstuitionaid.com.
A Couple of Changes to Note
- Mrs.
Kar is expecting a baby, due the first week in April. We wish her a
healthy delivery and recovery. Mrs. Mandy Longland will be substituting
until Mrs. Kar returns in August. Mrs. Gambaro is taking a temporary
leave of absence to shift into "grandma mode" through the end of the
school year. She will be returning in the summer and will continue to
be available from home for questions, particularly on Parent
Participation and Protecting God's Children compliance. Feel free to
contact her via Fast Direct or by phone. We all know she'll look
forward to talking with adults once in a while!
- Two
snow days were built into the schedule, but having taken three this
year, we need to arrange a make-up day. Consequently, April
25 and 28--originally scheduled as days off--will be regular school days, as
now noted in the Calendar.

St. Joseph's Altar Traditions Shared with Students
On
Friday, March 7, we honored St. Joseph at the 8:00 am Mass. Fr.
Bommarito shared some thoughts about the beautiful tradition
surrounding the St. Joseph Altar and many of the ladies who have worked
on the preparations for the parish celebration on Sunday attended
this Mass. In addition, each child received a small loaf of
blessed bread at the end of Mass. Andrew
and Stephen Lordo will join the members of the Missouri Bakery family
to help with the distribution of the bread. I wish to thank Missouri
Bakery for assisting us in honoring St. Joseph and carrying this
tradition to the children. The Vitale Bakery Family has given us pizza
dough to make pizzas to place on the altar in honor of St. Joseph. It
is my honor to do so in the name of the children.God bless our business community for always thinking of our children and our
school.
St. Joseph, pray for us, protect our families and restore just practices,
dignity and honor to our places of work.
St. Ambrose Student Art on Exhibition
St. John Vianney High School has invited St. Ambrose School to participate in an
exhibition of student artwork to be held at the high school during their
upcoming theater production of Guys and Dolls, April 11, 12, 18 and 19. It is
an honor to be asked to contribute artwork for this event, and everyone who
attends will see what we already know---how wonderful our students are!
Congratulations to the following students who will have their
work displayed: Sam Herbig, Christopher Pitti, Michael Dempsey, and
Perry May from grade 8; John O'Leary, grade 7; and John Summers from
grade 6.
Through
artistic endeavors students become active participants in continuing God's
creation in themselves and the community, and we applaud all of our St. Ambrose
students who continue to produce outstanding artwork. The
Saint Louis Symphony Volunteer Association has announced that the
artwork of Olivia Passafiume, a fifth grade student at St. Ambrose
School,
has been named to the "Top 100" in the Picture the Music art
event. The work
of the following students was also submitted for consideration: Joseph
Vollmer, grade 6; Marissa Sinak and Jaime Dempsey, grade 5; Isabella
Yates, grade 2; and Daniel Evans, Kindergarten. Congratulations to each
of our St. Ambrose Art Students as they are ALL winners in our book!

Kindergarten News
In Kindergarten this week we had a guest speaker (Miss Libby) from the NCADA
(National Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse.) She gave a wonderful lesson on
the importance of taking only medicine that a grown up has given you. She used
her puppet, Clover the Cow, to tell a story about Clover wanting to eat her
vitamins for a snack since they tasted like candy. Her mother had to explain to
her that while vitamins are good for you, that they are really medicine and
should only be eaten when given one by a trusted grown-up. Next Miss Libby
played a game with them. She showed them several pairs of plastic bags that
contained “look-alike items.” She explained that one bag had candy (sweet tarts,
smarties etc.) and the other had medicine (tums, aspirin etc.) This helped them
understand that many medicines look like candy, so they should never eat
anything unless a trusted adult has given it to them. Lastly, the discussion
turned to liquids such as bleach, and other cleaners that are not safe for anyone and beer,
wine, etc that are only safe for grown-ups. I encourage you to build on this
foundation and talk it over with your own children.
