School Service
Money raised during dress-down days at St. Ambrose from September through March has been in support of St. Patrick Center's Key Player Initiative. We submitted a check in the amount of $1646.26 for inclusion in the "corporate gift," representing all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. A press conference will be held on April 22 at St. Patrick Center announcing the final total! Thanks to all of you, it will be BIG!!!
"May God richly bless you for your leadership in this effort, and the children for their generosity and care!"

House System Road Trip
An opportunity for some teachers, parents, and the 7th grade students to go to Louisville, Kentucky, for a field trip has presented itself and Sr. Carol was eager to participate. St. Raphael School in Louisville is noted for a unique Middle School program entitled the “House System.” The House System is a team-building, cross-grade system that groups members of the 6-8 grades into “Houses” that work together to earn points. These points are due to good behavior and service for the school, parish, and community. Each house competes against each other to earn the most points, thereby earning various prizes like dress-down day, no-homework night, etc. The 7th grade students, since they will be the school leaders next year, will attend a House Meeting at St. Raphael and will be able to meet the students there for camaraderie. It is the hope that the 7th graders will have a better understanding of the system so that we can continue to improve ours for future students.

Heart Disease Prevention
Members of the St. Louis University School of Nursing will be visiting St. Ambrose Catholic School in the coming months. We would like to discuss with the students the importance of proper dietary choices and exercise in the prevention of heart disease, a prevalent health problem that continues to grow in today’s world.

Education of school age children regarding heart disease prevention can lay the foundations for healthy living and lifestyle in their futures. We plan to educate the students regarding prevention, diet, and exercise through a variety of activities that will illustrate the importance of proper dietary choices. We will also be performing teaching regarding exercise and increasing target heart rates. There will also be emphasis on decreasing the hours of television watched per week, and increasing regular exercise.

In addition, we will be distributing an anonymous survey to the students during regular school hours that will help us to assess their existing knowledge regarding health activities. We thank you very much for your cooperation, and look forward to meeting with your children. If you have any questions regarding our plan, please feel free to email us at sfranz3@slu.edu.

Our goal was 34.94 tons --- a 20% increase from last year. The money will go toward the new playground. Thanks to all who recycled to help us reach the goal!

Creative Writing Contest Winners
Congratulations to 8th graders Gwen Calcaterra and Dominick Freeman, finalists in the Respect Life Creative Writing Contest! These students wrote pieces that expressed their beliefs about chastity and respect for human life as taught by the Catholic Church. Gwen and Dominick will attend the Awards Assembly on Friday, April 25. Archbishop Raymond Burke will address the assembly at the Cardinal Rigali Center and present Certificates of Achievement to the finalists.

St. Ambrose Student Art on Exhibition
St. John Vianney High School has invited St. Ambrose School to participate in an exhibition of student artwork to be held at the high school during their upcoming theater production of Guys and Dolls, April 11, 12, 18 and 19. It is an honor to be asked to contribute artwork for this event, and everyone who attends will see what we already know---how wonderful our students are!

Congratulations to the following students who will have their work displayed: Sam Herbig, Christopher Pitti, Michael Dempsey, and Perry May from grade 8; John O'Leary, grade 7; and John Summers from grade 6.

Through artistic endeavors students become active participants in continuing God's creation in themselves and the community, and we applaud all of our St. Ambrose students who continue to produce outstanding artwork.

The Saint Louis Symphony Volunteer Association has announced that the artwork of Olivia Passafiume, a fifth grade student at St. Ambrose School, has been named to the "Top 100" in the Picture the Music art event. The work of the following students was also submitted for consideration: Joseph Vollmer, grade 6; Marissa Sinak and Jaime Dempsey, grade 5; Isabella Yates, grade 2; and Daniel Evans, Kindergarten. Congratulations to each of our St. Ambrose Art Students as they are ALL winners in our book!

Yearbook Photos
Please continue to submit photos either on cd or to Laura McQuay's personal email address (lramcq@hotmail.com). We will incorporate spring activities (sports, First Communion, Confirmation, School Picnic, etc.) from this school year in the yearbook for next year. Thanks!

Notes to Parents
New Instructions Regarding Campbell's Labels
Please send in the entire label, as the instructions for submitting labels have changed. We will have homeroom parents help with the cutting that is required. Pass the word to grandparents and neighbors who may save them too. And, don't forget to keep clipping boxtops and labels and saving them for upcoming contests!

Save More Labels
Please save labels from Nestle Pure Life Purified Water. The school gains points for every label saved and we can earn equipment at the end of the year. Please turn these labels in separately from the Campbell labels.
