St. Ambrose School Lights the Way
Since
we do not have a dress-down day in October, please send donations to
the office through the end of the month to help the homeless.
Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the
largest and oldest campaign against drugs. Our Student Council has planned to
promote this week in several ways. During this week, St. Ambrose students will
each wear a tied red ribbon to show our personal commitments to a drug-free
lifestyle. We will also have a guest speaker from the police department to
educate our students about the effects of drug use. We hope that this week will
help St. Ambrose students unite to take a stand against drugs!
Conference Sign Ups
All families may sign
up for conferences if they have not already done so. Remember when scheduling that students in grades 6 through 8
accompany parents to the conference.
Trunk or Treat
We look forward to seeing everyone at Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 28th. The
event will start at 4:30 for Mass. Prizes awarded for best car (Hampton
car wash), scariest costume ($10 Incredible Pizza certificate), funniest costume
($10 Incredible Pizza certificate), and cutest costume ($10 Incredible Pizza
certificate). Orders will be taken for Imo's Pizza before and for 15 minutes
after Mass for delivery during the event. Pepperoni, sausage, or cheese pizzas
are $10. Drinks and popcorn will also be on sale. Come check out all the car
creations, get scared in the Haunted Hallway, and enjoy the company of other St
Ambrose families. Prayer Campaign for Priests and
Consecrated Religious
If
you can commit to praying 10 Hail Marys a day from Monday,
October
15, through the end of the month, please sign the prayer pledge in the
School Office or at the TWB tables after Mass. These prayer pledges
will be bound in book form and presented at the Cathedral Basilica during the 5:00 pm Mass on December 8, the Feast
of the Immaculate Conception. All are welcome to attend this Mass.
Catholic
High School Information
The
Middle School teachers accept invitations from Catholic high schools to
learn about their programs and entry qualifications. These visits
include presentations by department heads. Parents may access
information on each high school's program, fees, etc.
under the "Secondary Schools" link at archstl.org.
High School Open House is Sunday, November 4.
Counseling
Services
We are blessed again this semester with
graduate student counselors from SLU who will be doing their practicum
here working with students on social, personal, and motivational
issues.
Please contact Terry Kellar or Lisa Horner if you feel your child would
benefit from this counseling service. We will send you a permission
slip to sign and return to school. Counselors began the week
of September 24th.

Classroom News
Mrs. Griner's 8th Grade writing class is reviewing
techniques for propaganda, examining cartoons/posters/advertisements for
propaganda, and writing expository essays to help students recognize the
problems of propaganda for adults and teen-agers.
The 8th Grade religion
classes have completed Body of Christ projects. They have used The Catechism of
the Catholic Church, Scripture, and newspaper articles to identify and
artistically represent the Body of Christ.
The 7th Grade religion
classes have completed the Jesus Project. Each student asked a question about
Jesus' culture and early life, researched the question, and presented projects
to show how Jesus was influenced by His family, His culture, and His Jewish
traditions.

Honors Band Festival
Five St. Ambrose students are participating at DuBourg on Saturday, October 20! Congratulations Molly
Moran, Maddie Moran, Claire Jegle, Timmy Booth, and Justin Seaton. The kids
have fun, they learn new things, and they work with people from all over. Fifteen
grade schools are participating, with a total of 115 kids. Selection is based on the best
6th - 8th Grade students in each program. These are all high caliber band students with
high caliber directors. It is an honor to have our kids involved.
St. Ambrose
Second Grade Ballerinas
The
Moscow Ballet will celebrate its 15th anniversary presenting its Great
Russian Nutcracker in over 70 cities this 2007 holiday season. With its
all-Russian cast, renowned for exquisite dancing, choreography, and
spectacular scenic design, this show is the must-see production of
2007. Of special interest are the two St. Ambrose second graders,
Madelyn Wansong and Grace Jegle, who recently auditioned and were
selected to dance with the Moscow Ballet in their St. Louis
performances. Madelyn will be dancing in the French variation and
Grace will be in the dance of the snowflakes. The performances will be
at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center on the UMSL campus on
December 26, 2007, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. For more information on the
Moscow Ballet or for tickets, log onto www.nutcracker.com.

Notes to Parents
- Fast Food is not acceptable for lunch; please do not deliver to school for your children.
- The Handbook is a guide, but does not address all situations. When in doubt about a policy or procedure, please ask.
- If your child has a
special medical need, please inform Linda in the School Office.
- Please
don't park in the soccer lot during school hours if you are visiting
school or chaperoning a field trip, as the cars block the use of the
lot for recess.
- Birthday
treats are distributed to students in their homerooms during break
time. Please follow Handbook guidelines regarding acceptable treats and
also refrain from delivering special lunches to students on these days.
- Party invitations
may be distributed at school only if all students in the
class are invited.
In
the Office
Please
stop by to purchase Entertainment Books for $25 each. Don't forget to pick up
some Together We're Better cards while you're
there.
Hot
Lunch
Program and Procedure
Click the Cafeteria Menu link
in the right
column of the Fast
Direct home page to see what's being served. Parents may purchase
a card
for 7 lunches. Please put the $23 (checks
payable to Chris’ Pancake and Dining) in an envelope clearly
marked with the following information: - First and last name of
each child.
- Grade of each child next
to the name
- Homeroom Number of each
child next to the name
Please keep track of the
days your child
chooses lunch. Some parents post a “lunch calendar”
and mark the days 1-7 as purchases are made. The teachers and
Chris’ Pancake will take the process from there. If your child forgets to
bring
lunch, the alternative this year is a cheese sandwich. The price for a
single day's lunch is $3.50. All
questions, suggestions, and concerns are to be addressed to
Chris’ Pancake and Dining via Fast Direct.
Link to Lunches
The
PTO has made it easier for you to track the Taste of the Hill
lunches you've purchased. Check the link on the main Fast Direct page
to view a spreadsheet of payments through December.

Instructions Regarding Campbell's Labels
Please
send in the entire label, as the instructions for submitting labels
have changed. We will have homeroom parents help with the
cutting
that is required. Pass
the word to
grandparents and neighbors who may save them too. And, don't forget to
keep clipping boxtops and labels and saving them for upcoming contests!
Save
More Labels
Please save labels from Nestle Pure
Life Purified Water. The school gains points for every label saved and
we can earn equipment at the end of the year. Please turn these labels
in separately from the Campbell labels.
