Marissa is a snowflake and Maddie is a Spanish variation dancer. Tickets are available at www.Nutcracker.com.

Mass to Honor American Veterans
Local veterans were honored at Mass on November 8 as the parishioners of St. Ambrose remembered Veteran’s Day. The church was decorated with patriotic pictures and decorations. Upon arriving at Mass, each veteran was presented with a hand-made card and a red carnation. The cards were made by St. Ambrose students to thank the veterans for their service. The honorees were then escorted to reserved seating. An estimated 30-40 veterans attended the Mass celebrated by Fr. Bill. Patriotic songs were played before Mass.

The processional was led by several Scouts and their leaders. The student volunteers were Jeffery A., David B., Kyle B., Tyler B., Rachel B., Timmy B., Alan F., Dominic F., Liam J., Mia J., Ben K., Tommy M., Chris O., Louis S., Dominic S., Justin S., and Stephen S. The leaders were Mr. Jeff Dunn, Mr. Dan Beato, and Mrs. Sue O’Connor. The Boy Scouts then led the congregation in the Pledge of Allegiance. Next, a moving tribute to the Flag was read by the Boy Scouts to remind us of the sacrifices that won our nation’s freedom.

During the Homily, Father Bill thanked the veterans for their service to God and country. After Communion, John S., a seventh grader, read a poem to honor the veterans. The congregation responded with a standing ovation for the veterans. We are proud of the hard work and sacrifice of our veterans who served their country proudly.

This was the first service project of the Service Learning Club. They did a wonderful job! The veterans expressed such joy when they read their cards. Several gentlemen said that the cards meant everything to them.

Thanks to Mrs. Felt and Mrs. King for helping to organize this special event and a special thanks to all who served to preserve our freedom and liberty.

Future plans for the CSLP include monthly assemblies, volunteer opportunities, fund raising ideas, and participation in events such as Catholic Schools Week, Jump Rope for Heart, St. Joseph's Workers, and the Turkey Bowl. We'll report new developments here!

Lisa Horner reports that the visiting team for the School Improvement Plan will be at St. Ambrose on February 11 and 12. The Catholic Identity report is 99% complete; Institutional Issues is in process; administration and faculty members are contributing to the Educational Issues report. Members of these steering committees will be participating with the visiting team and all will be invited to the liturgy.

The Power of Prayer

Please continue to keep baby Grace L. and Stevie L, grade 1, in your prayers.

Anyone wishing to include names or special intentions in our community prayer chain, please contact Debbie Hilderbrand at school.

Congratulations to our Chess Club, which has just finished week 2 of a 7 week tournament. They are playing other teams from New City School, Kennard, McKinley, Mark Twain, and Dewey Schools. Representing St Ambrose are Riley F., Alan P., James O., John B., Greg B., Nicolas M., Will H., John S., Keith H. and Nicholas D. Keep up the great job, St Ambrose Chess Club!

PTO-Sponsored Events and Fund Raisers
PTO has a couple of events coming up to help make your holiday season run smoother!

December 1 - Kemoll's Top Of The Met
December12 - Christmas Spectacular at The Fox Theatre!

The way we are able sponsor these events for our families is through Together We Are Better and e-scrip. Please register for a Schnucks gift card; they send us 1% of total registered sales each month. We only have about 3% of our families who participate, and we receive around $500 a month. Just think if 50% of our families participated! Please continue to support the PTO, so we can continue to become stronger for our family events and children's activities.
If anyone has questions about fund raisers and upcoming events please call, or e-mail Maureen Brusati, PTO President.

Boys' Town Well-Managed Class Update

Our social skill for the week is "Staying On Task." The steps are:
  1. Look at your task or assignment.
  2. Think about the steps needed to complete the task.
  3. Focus all of your attention on the task.
  4. Stop working only when instructed.
  5. Ignore distractions and interruptions from others.

This skill would be very helpful for parents to reinforce during homework time!

Mrs. King used Blended Teaching this week in the fifth grade Religion classes. Students watched a movie, "Toying with the Truth," and then discussed how the character should have used the skill "Disagreeing Appropriately."

Accepting "No" for an AnswerDisagreeing AppropriatelyAsking for HelpAsking Permission
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Say "OK."
  3. Stay calm.
  4. If you disagree, ask later.
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Use a pleasant voice.
  3. Tell why you feel differently.
  4. Give a reason.
  5. Listen to the other person.
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Ask the person if they have time to help you.
  3. Clearly explain the kind of help you need.
  4. Thank the person for helping.
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Use a calm and pleasant voice.
  3. Say, "May I . . ."
  4. Accept the answer calmly.
Greeting OthersFollowing InstructionsListeningAccepting Criticism or a Consequence
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Use a pleasant voice.
  3. Say "hi" or "hello."
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Say (or think) "Okay."
  3. Do what you've been asked
    right away.
  1. Look at the person who is talking
    and remain quiet.
  2. Wait until the person is through
    talking before you speak.
  3. Show that you heard by nodding
your head and saying "Okay," "That's interesting," etc.
  1. Look at the person.
  2. Say "Okay."
  3. Stay calm.

We are hoping that parents will teach and reinforce these social skills at home and when in other settings. They are useful in all social situations. When you use the same language the students hear at school, it helps to strengthen the skill.

Published Authors
Students in Mrs. Schaeffer’s Language Arts classes wrote persuasive essays about a variety of topics. She sent them in to a contest sponsored by Creative Communication, and 37 out of the 60 essays were chosen to be published in their upcoming anthology.

The following students had their essays accepted:
Seventh graders Chandler A., Kyle B., Becky C., Vince M., Addyson M., Becky O., Kennedy P., Sam R., Rachel S., Andrew S., Julia S., John S., Joe V., and Robert W. Eighth graders Tim B., Nicci A., Emma E., Laura B., Jessie H., Sofia B., Hannah H., Emma G., Michaela M., Alyssa H., Molly M., Claire J., Rachel O., Augie J., Layla S., Stephanie K., Rainey S., Stephen L., Maddi W., Abby M., Joey W., Emily P., Justin S.

Congratulations to these students. We will proudly display their work in a few months when we receive our copy of this anthology.

Monthly House Update
The Middle School held the monthly "House-Wide Meeting" on Monday, November 17. The game was "Name That Tune," organized by Mrs. Hilderbrand. It gave each house a chance to compete and earn points. The students thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Maddie M. commented, "That was amazing!" Caitlin B. agreed, "That was awesome!" Hannah H. said, "It was a really effective way to get points." The total points earned were as follows: Brigid--325, Michael--225, David--225, Vincent--150, Catherine--275 and Thomas--325.

Red Cross Presentation
On November 19, a representative from the Red Cross presented a Basic Aid program to children in grades 3, 4, and 5. She talked about what an emergency is and the importance of staying calm, which she said was the hardest part. She then explained the 3 Cs—Check, Call, and Care. First, you CHECK out the situation to ensure it is safe to enter/stay in an area and if so, CHECK out the situation even more by gathering facts. Then, you CALL 911 for help, explain that it is an emergency call, give the operator the facts, and do not hang up. Lastly, you CARE for the person as needed. While we hope they never need to apply the information, it is good to have just in case!

Third Grade Update
In third grade Social Studies, we spent the last three weeks talking about the election and the voting process. We spent some time talking about the two candidates who were running for president and the steps they took during the election process. We also nominated animals to be our class mascot, filled out voter registration cards, and voted in both primary and general elections. (We even stood in line while we waited to vote!) It was a fun experience and exciting to see how interested the third graders were in the election this year!

Bellarmine Speech Meet
Our Bellarmine Speech Team gave it their best and brought home the Gold! Chandler A. performed a humorous speech, “My Dumb Diary” and Hannah H. performed a serious speech, “Mary Stuart Pleads.” Each girl earned perfect scores to win their gold ribbons! Mrs. Henning, who coached Hannah, represented St. Ambrose as a judge at the meet held at St. Katharine Drexel. Mrs. King, Chandler’s coach, volunteered as a Bellarmine Board Member to help run the meet. The Speech coaches this year also include Mrs. Jo Ann Dreas and Mrs. Erin Schaeffer. The next speech meet will be held in February at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

Faculty Update
Mrs. Schaeffer's baby is due in November and Julie Sunderman will be substitute teaching in her absence. She has a B.A. in English from Iowa, has taught in Virginia, and studied in India! We're happy to have her here on the Hill.
