The St. Ambrose school community extends deepest sympathy to the Nerviani and Stallis families
on the tragic loss of fellow parent, Gina Stallis.
The week of October 25 through November 1 is designated for contributions to the
scholarship fund for Gina's sons (4th grade and 2nd grade).
Envelopes will be sent home and available in church.

First Quarter Comes to a Close
The First
Quarter of the 2009-2010 school year ends on October 20. Grades on Fast
Direct will be closed for viewing to parents on October 19 at 3:00 pm.
Grades will be available for viewing again on Tuesday, October 27, in
order to prepare for Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 29.
Parents may sign up for conference times on the schedule outside of the
main office the week of October 19. Please keep in mind that students
in grades 6-8 accompany parents to conferences.
Enrichment Update
Theatre
and Dance are still open for grades K-8; however, the enrollment as of
October 20 will determine the options for end of session productions.
To register, simply pay the one-time blanket commitment fee of $20.

Box Tops Contest Update
This
first Box Tops Contest of the year will conclude Wednesday
October 21. If you have any Box Tops for Education, please send them to
school to assist with the purchase
of additional white boards. Middle school students who wish to help
prepare the box tops may earn House Points on Saturday, October 24, at
9:00 am in the cafeteria.
Raffle Tickets
Thanks to Jen Cissi for organizing the raffle ticket sales through the school, and to all who sold and turned tickets in at La Festa.
Ticket sales through the school totaled over $4100. The following
students won the raffle ticket contest prize of a $50 TWB gift card:
Emily R. (K-2) $301, Gabby C, (3-5), $306, and John S. (6-8) $420.

Trunk or Treat
Friday, October 30, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
This
year, the event is being held in the soccer and warehouse lots to the
east and west of Hereford. The street will be blocked, as for the
school picnic. Costumed children can trick for treats from the trunks
of vehicles whose owners have reserved a parking spot. Concessions
available for purchase in the cafeteria include hot dogs, hamburgers,
waffles, and chips. Chefs may compete in the Chili Cook-Off and anyone
may purchase a tasting bowl to sample the entries. Additional
activities include music, face painting, and a scavenger hunt. Watch
for the flyer coming home with all the details and sign-up
opportunities.
Health Screenings
The children of St. Ambrose will will be screened for scoliosis, vision, and hearing
on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23. Thank you to Mrs. Annie
Masella and her group of volunteers for organizing this for us.
PTO News
The
PTO Special Lunch will be hosted by Lorenzo’s on October 19. They will be
serving lasagna, salad, and ice cream to the school children who wish
to purchase this lunch by Friday, October 16. Maureen and Larry Fuse will be present to serve
the food.
TWB gift cards are available for purchase each day in
the office, after Masses on weekends, and on each Friday in the lot
after school beginning at 2:45 pm.
Special Plans for October 20
- The
7th and 8th grade students, along with Mrs. Kar, Mrs. Schaeffer, and
Mrs. Scherer, will be attending the region-wide Confirmation Retreat at
St. John the Baptist. These students have received a retreat flyer.
- The
6th grades students will have a day of learning about each other,
coping with difficult people/situations, and organizing to help them be
successful in Middle School and beyond. They will spend the day at St.
Ambrose with Mrs. Black, Mrs. Ronzio, and Mrs. Hilderbrand, and enjoy
lunch at Favazza’s. This will be a great day for the class to learn
about each other and work with each other. Field trip permission forms have been sent home.

No hot
lunch will be served, but milk and juice will be available. Students in
grades K-5 may invite a guest to bring lunch to share at school. An
extended lunch period will be as follows: Grades K-2 11:00 - 12:00,
Grades 3-5 12:00 - 1:00.

Grades K-5 will attend a show by Abra-Kid-Abra from 9:00AM-9:45AM.
This program is a Create Your Own Magical Adventure Show.
Abra-Kid-Abra is a company based in St. Louis that performs various skits
for student learning. Parents
are welcome to attend.
Save the Date
The second quarter PTO Family Dinner at Kemoll's is scheduled for November 30. Watch for a flyer with more information and be aware that on this night, and for any other PTO Family Dinners, Extended Care will close at 4:45, one hour early. Thanks!

News from the Art Department
We welcome back Art Assistant, Miss Frances Torretta, as she begins her
eleventh year of volunteer service to St. Ambrose School. "Miss
Frances," as she is affectionately known by the the children, is
tireless in her efforts to help the students--and Mrs. Dreas!
We also welcome back Mr. Paul Gitto to the art room on Thursday
mornings. He is sharing his vast knowledge of clay by showing the class
different methods of creating three dimensional works in that art
medium. This is Mr. Gitto's second year of volunteer service in the art
room.

Ink Jet Cartridges, Paper, and Aluminum Cans
This free program generates money
for St. Ambrose and helps protect the environment. Simply drop the
cartridges off in the cafeteria and the paper and cans in the bins on
Hereford.
Instructions Regarding
Campbell's Labels
Please
send in the entire label, as the instructions for submitting labels
have changed. We will have homeroom parents help with the
cutting
that is required. Pass
the word to
grandparents and neighbors who may save them too. And, don't forget to
keep clipping boxtops and labels and saving them for upcoming contests!

Special Lunch Schedule
To
thank the neighborhood restaurants for their support and to share their
wonderful cuisine with our students, PTO invites them to provide lunch
to our students. Each month features a different restaurant and
selection. The dates for the First Semester lunches are as follows:
October
19 - Lorenzo's (Lasagna, salad, and ice cream)
November
16 - Toscano's (Toasted ravioli and garlic bread)
December
14 - Favazza's (Grilled Italian chicken strips and white pasta)
The
cost is the same as last year, $4 for grades K-4, $5 for grades 5-8 and
teachers/staff. Watch for
the order form for these lunches at home and return to the office with
your payment. Please note
that Chris' will not be served on these days.
Hot
Lunch Program Procedures
- Lunch
cards are $15.00 for 5 lunches.
- Every
child buying lunch must have a lunch card before getting in line. Money
will not be accepted in the lunch line. Please make checks payable to
Chris'.
- Students
who forget their lunch will be given cereal and milk that will cost
1.00. Parents will be notified through Fast Direct.
- Snacks
such as pizza, nachos, cereal will be available to buy for students in
grades 3-8.
- A
lunch count is essential in the morning, so there is no food waste and
the students who come through last have a proper lunch. We will not
prepare for extra lunches this year.
Archdiocesan
Mandate
All parents who wish to participate in any
event (lunch duty, field trips, class parties, Breakfast with Santa,
etc.) at school involving children MUST attend the Protecting God's
Children Workshop. For information on times and locations of the
workshops, please visit the archdiocesan website www.archstl.org and follow
the link or consult the recent message to parents on Fast Direct.
