At Saint Ambrose, Children Are First!

Saint Ambrose Catholic School is committed not only to the formal classroom education of its children, but to their emotional, spiritual and social education as well.   Following is a listing of the activities offered to our students throughout the school year.

Athletics     Students from Kindergarten through Grade Eight may participate in organized team sports throughout the year.   Team sports are offered in soccer, bocce, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, and T-ball.  For more information, see the Athletic Association.

Band         Students in grades 3-8 may join the Saint Ambrose School Band.  Our band practices twice each week under the direction of a qualified band director.  These lessons are very affordable and convenient in that they are offered right here at school.   Students rent instruments through Nottleman Music Store and have the option to buy the instrument.  The band presents two concerts during the school year.

Speech Club    Saint Ambrose School offers to the students in grades 5-8 the opportunity to participate in a Speech Club.  This group meets to improve in the area of public speaking and to prepare for upcoming Speech Meets.  The club members participate in three formal meets during the school year as well as opportunities to speak in public at school activities.

Student Council  Students in grades 5-8 may participate in student government by participating in Student Council.   Students run an election campaign in the spring of the school year and once elected serve a term of one year.  The Student Council members work closely with the administration to plan activities for the students at Saint Ambrose.   The purpose of this organization is to encourage student participation as leaders within the school, to provide student representation, to create a spirit of pride within our school, and to promote the value of Catholic Education.

Scouting Programs  Saint Ambrose School offers strong scouting programs.  Both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are offered to our students.  From Tiger Cubs and Daisies as far along as Eagle Scout and Girl Scout, our troops are strong and have excellent leadership.

Safety Patrol  Students in grades 6-8 serve as members of our school safety patrol program.  This group of students is commissioned to act as monitors at arrival and dismissal on school days to keep our children safe and free of injury and harm.

Technology Club  This club is open to students in grades 6-8 who are interested in technology.  The students meet with their moderator once a month as well as work on a daily basis to maintain the appearance of our computer lab, as well as the distribution and maintenance of the technology equipment within the school.

The Sacred Heart Club is an after-school activity open to both boys and girls in grades 5-8 who have the desire to be of service to others. This group, under the direction of a faculty member, will focus on the area of service to our Catholic church and its interests (the poor, support of the missions, etc.) to our neighborhood of the Hill, (in particular our elderly and sick parishioners), and to the needs of the greater St. Louis area, (soup kitchens, shelters).

Little Friends of the Sacred Heart is an extra-curricular activity for girls at St. Ambrose in grades 2-4. This group, under the direction two faculty members, organizes activities for the girls in the areas of service to others, prayer, devotional practices and social events. As Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Sisters who staff St. Ambrose school take seriously our call to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart, especially in the lives of our children. Through the activities of the Little Friends, we hope to instill in these young girls a desire to love God and their neighbor, to develop a love for prayer and to understand the value of service to others.

Foreign Languages are offered to the students at Saint Ambrose. The following languages are offered during this year of 2000-2001:

Italian: Italian is taught to our students in Grades Kindergarten through Eight once a week during the school day. This is made possible through a grant from the Italian government.
