The St. Joseph Altar, March 15, 2020
The tradition of the St. Joseph Altar began in Sicily many years ago as a means of showing gratitude to the foster father of Jesus for deliverance from a severe famine. The Altar became an annual celebration in the homes of many Sicilian families, and was brought to the Hill by immigrants from the region. It has since been turned into a parish event with participation from not only the descendants of the original Sicilian and Lombard immigrants, but anyone of any heritage who loves St. Joseph and the values he embodies. This is an inclusive and family friendly celebration. Please join the festivities and bring your children. Everyone is welcome.
At St. Ambrose Parish, the St. Joseph altar is held in the school cafeteria and gym, which are beautifully decorated for the day. There is a large altar or table in each place, where many baked goods and breads are laid out for purchase after the Mass and blessing. A statue of St. Joseph is placed on a platform in the center of this table.
At 11 a.m., there will be a special Mass in Italian in St. Ambrose Church. In keeping with tradition, every year a special group of people are honored at this Mass. This year’s honorees are The Hill Boys, a group of men who are long time Hill residents, and give generously to local causes.
After the Mass, around 12:15 p.m., the congregation will be invited to join a procession to the school cafeteria, where the altars will be blessed, and the feasting will begin. Local restaurants donate very generous trays of their delicious specialties for this lunch. Some of the renowned chefs will be present to serve their savory fare. Everyone is invited to go through the serving line, and there is no set charge. A thoughtful donation is requested. All monies raised will go to St. Ambrose School Tuition Assistance Fund.
